Tentative Title- Rape and the Black Experience: A Literary Response

Concept Note

As per most of the definitions, rape is defined as non-consensual penetration of either the vagina or the anus. However, it is not merely physical, though it is rooted in biology, but its impacts are psychological in nature. Its consequences are experienced not only by the victim but by the victimizer as well. In almost all the cultures, rape is deployed as a weapon of domination by patriarchy. The penultimate threat for a woman, as it has been observed since centuries, is the fear of being raped. Through rape, patriarchy has often exercised absolute hegemony.

Masculinities have been created and codified by every aspect of society, and have been embodied in everything from images of cave men to the Ken doll. Much of this creation depends upon the stifling of manifestations of masculinities that, over time, fluctuate in terms of social acceptability and utility. This volume will interrogate classic and contemporary cultural products in order to expose and explore how and why masculinities have been censored as “toxic” or are increasingly being silenced in other ways. The collection seeks to offer a mindful engagement with the rapidly evolving field of masculinity studies and the emergent crises facing masculinities of all kinds.

As the ambit of global modernist studies expands, the place of continental Europe in the geography of modernism is something of a quandary. Indeed, the continent’s place was never very clear to begin with. In her foundational essay “Periodizing Modernism,” Susan Stanford Friedman criticizes a disciplinary bias that favors Anglo-American modernism at the expense of writing from postcolonial nations. Yet Friedman also notes that the old, chiefly Anglo-American modernist studies possessed only a “limited continental scope.” Thus the turn to the globe––that is, the turn away from Europe––has consigned the continent to the disciplinary past when, according to Friedman, it was a marginalized domain in the first place.

We aim to explore the nuances and complexities of settlement, place, and space in the context of settler-colonial societies through an intersectional social justice framework, and how to challenge systems of injustice that become established through place and space.

EJAS (European Journal of American Studies) is accepting submissions for a special issue on the American neuronovel to be released in the fall of 2021.

 The word “neuronovel” was coined by American critic Marco Roth in a famous 2009 article, “The Rise of the Neuronovel.” According to Roth, in contemporary Anglo-American fiction “the novel of consciousness or the psychological or confessional novel—the novel, at any rate, about the workings of a mind—has transformed itself into the neurological novel, wherein the mind becomes the brain.” To illustrate his statement, he then quotes a long list of examples:
