Very recently, according to Hulu, "With the help of its Twitter-happy cast and a tireless fanbase, Community took down AMC's force of a zombie show, The Walking Dead, by more than 11,000 votes to win Hulu's 2012 Best in Show competition."

Dante in the Nineteenth Century - 6-8 September 2012

Wednesday, May 2, 2012 - 1:32pm
Instiute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London

This conference aims to bring together literary critics, historians, and art historians with scholars from similar disciplines specializing in the nineteenth century. To give focus to what might otherwise be an unwieldy spread, we intend to centre our theme on Florence – for many Victorians the epitome of Italian culture and tradition – both through the eyes of the historians and critics who interpreted it, and also through the eyes of the Anglo-American community that lived there (most notably the Brownings and their circle) and did so much to spread the cult of Dante. we also welcome papers on Blake, Pre-Raphaelites, or even later novelists, such as Mrs Humphry Ward. We also hope to hear papers on Dante's political theory and social ethics.

What do men and women want?

Maybe this has been discussed too often. Yet, the novelty of our rapidly transforming times uncomfortably redirects it to us. The acute specialization and compartmentalization of our living experiences means that often we're observing the most obvious things from an outsider's perspective. Of course, the full picture is hardly available to us (if ever it was available to humanity) despite our best efforts to empiricise our little knowledge and so, in that sense, tepid and stereotypical gender roles have always polarized opinions in all ages.

Related questions include the following: How do writers in different genres and disciplines conceptualize the relationship between figures and truths? How do they use figurative language to convey those truths? How does a specific interpretation of the truth of a figure change a writer's poetics? The influence of Tony Kushner on 21st Century Dramatists

updated:
Tuesday, May 1, 2012 - 11:59am
David Garrett Izzo Shaw University

Almost twenty years ago Tony Kushner raised the rafters with his epic Angels in America and this gave just cause for playwrights to recognize that Kushner was now the new benchmark and, as Arthur Miller said, attention must be paid. The HBO televised Angels gave many admirers and aspirers an opportunity to see the play more so than even its many nationwide productions. The influence of Kushner and his plays has reached into the context and subtext of a mindset that reconsidered what plays can do as art, and as socio-political activism reflected in both traditional and tradition-defying new drama.
