Paul de Man may have declared formalist criticism a dead-end in the 1950s, but it took until the deconstructive the 1970s for formalism finally die. For de Man, William Empson’s study of ambiguity gave the lie to I.A. Richards’s claims that literature could transmit experience. Deconstruction further insisted that the sliding of the signifier made the possibility of shared experience through literature difficult if not impossible.

51st Northeast Modern Language Association Convention

This lightning roundtable seeks to amplify experiences of emerging women, trans, and non-binary scholars from a range of backgrounds across graduate, contingent, and junior institutional stature as they navigate careers in the academy. Participants will offer 3-5 minute “lightning presentations” that (a) share experience, (b) offer advice, and (c) demand change across micro and macro structures of the academy. Following the presentations will be ample time for open discussion between the participants and audience members.

Eve Sedgwick famously sought to move away from the paranoid imperative towards a more reparative relation; Sharon Best and Stephen Marcus have proposed surface reading as an antidote to symptomatic methodology; and, more recent still, Rita Felski has underscored the banality of suspicious hermeneutics as a central premise in her circumscription of the limits of critique.

This panel invites proposals to examine the notion, theory, idea, and ontology of the trace and the ways in which it can be deployed in literature, image studies, art, film, and other media and disciplines. 

From its rudimentary manifestations as smoke and fire and footprint, to theological significations of the image of Jesus on the Shroud of Turin, the trace, as a visible marker of an absent presence, generates a compelling milieu to meditate on the proliferation of meaning in text and image.

How can we apprehend the “terms of translation” shaping the construction and circulation of texts and artifacts across space and time? What sites and contexts of cultural and linguistic encounter move us to question those terms? Translation can be understood as always entangled with its surroundings, in tension with and inseparable from the place of its construction and of its reception at different times and places, suggesting that the complexity of language relations can remain constant across sites of inquiry; it can also have a flattening effect for the receiver, often blurring the line between “speaking of” and “speaking for”, and obscuring the networks of actors and processes involved in its making.

Puppets are a universal phenomenon that appears in all cultures. Varying in size from the miniscule to the
colossal, puppetry is of an enormous diversity: from rounded (the string puppet or the marionette, the
rod-puppet, the hand- or glove-puppet, the finger-puppet) to flat (the shadow-show, the toy or paper
theatre); from 'living' marionettes and bodies fastened to performers, to 'held' puppets (Japanese Bunraku
theatre), puppets come in all shapes and sizes. Performances involving puppets are no less variegated:

The unbearable always feels like the end. And yet, Lee Edelman and Lauren Berlant write in Sex, or the Unbearable, encountering the unbearable “unleashes the energy that allows for the possibility of change.” Such movements towards change occur across genres and scales, from the inter-galactic effort to unwrite an apocalyptic ending in Avengers: End Game, to combating climate change in the emergent “Cli-fi” genre, to tidying up on self-improvement shows that attempt to make domestic life more bearable. Such depictions of persisting, attenuating, and enduring raise questions about the size, scope, and location of the unbearable.

In 2011, responding to a few famous men’s remarks that “women aren’t funny,” Tina Fey wrote, “It is an impressively arrogant move to conclude that just because you don't like something, it is empirically not good. I don't like Chinese food, but I don't write articles trying to prove it doesn't exist.”

In recent years, it has only become more difficult to argue the nonexistence, irrelevance, or inferiority of women’s comedy. This panel will explore the explosion in women’s comedy, including in novels, memoirs, stand-up, television series, and political commentary.

The high cost of a college education and the persistent worries about both immediate and future employment opportunities have resulted in students and their families doubting the value of the humanities, and all too often, the value of a college degree. These pervasive doubts contrast to the many reports and surveys of employers who stress their preferences for hiring graduates with the very traits the study of humanities imbues: creative thinking, team work, empathy, communication skills, and curiosity. Despite the number of closures of humanities programs and the disappearance of colleges dedicated to the liberal arts, one population of potential students for humanities programs continues to grow: prison inmates.

Sound is being celebrated as a source of insight in the humanities. Foregrounding the sense condemned to play second fiddle by Plato, scholars are tapping into sonic, auditive and aural phenomena and their technological reproduction, mapping practices of sound production, exploring soundscapes of different periods, compiling cultures and histories of hearing and listening. This panel establishes the presence of and explores queer themes and narratives in South Asian literature. While the focus is on the last forty years, we will also include more historic approaches as well.

It is an often-accepted critical truism that South Asian Literature is devoid of its focus on narratives of queer resistance in its literature. Thus, the fight to highlight queer themes within larger heterosexual texts is more important than ever. South Asia with its rich and diverse literary background was never short of themes on queer genre but the practice was so normative at the same time so tabooed that it rarely found its way in literature.

Setting social guidelines for women in various circles and economic classes has been common practice for centuries: as early as the 13th century and most popular in the 18th, conduct books established standards for righteous noble/rich women of marrying age, and gave their readers guides by which to weed out the spiritually and socially (and financially) destitute. Written by both men and women, these texts encouraged readers to practice a demure nature and tasteful displays of wealth in the interest of attracting potential suitors and keeping themselves in the circles of “important” friends, but these standards were frequently subverted in...rather creative ways.
