The Travel and Literature area at CEA is seeking submissions on any aspect of travel and literature, including but not limited to travelogues; travel and ecocriticism; regionalism; travel and identity; intercultural perspectives; etc. Theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome, as are papers concerning various genres and historical periods of literature. Of particular interest will be presentations that actualize the conference theme, VISION AND REVISION, as it applies to travelers across America, around the world, and through time and space.  How do writers articulate vision (and revision) of and within the places, spaces, experiences, texts, and selves of their travels?

I am seeking roundtable papers/presentations that will foster a discussion about common questions that arise for graduate students and postdocs as they enter the job market. Advice will address careers both in academia and in alt-ac. The session is intended to create a space in which seasoned professionals and early career scholars can share tips and ideas, describe job application experiences, and foster mentorship relationships.

This special issue explores the practice of curation as a multimodal form of creative-critical scholarship. Creative-critical scholarship often employs creative practice as methods and methodologies (Anderson, 2014). It does so in order to not only articulate, but to demonstrate and make material, the relevance of arts practice as scholarly inquiry (Wysocki, 2004). We see  creative-critical scholarship as an artistic scholarly method facilitating action and engagement in critical social issues. We intend, then, for this special issue to call further attention to creative-critical scholarship as a multimodal rhetorical practice.

We are seeking completed submissions for an edited volume that interrogates representations of child and youth agency in fantasy.  Our collection Walking in Other Worlds: Fantastical Journeys of Children’s Agency explores child and youth agency in the context of fantasy popular cultural forms.  These sources of analyses may include television, cartoons, films, novels, toys, comic books/graphic novels, advertising, storytelling/folklore, fashion, art, video games, etc.  An academic publisher is connected to this project.

Representations of children’s agency in fantasy can be analyzed from a variety of grounding points.  For example, chapters might consider the intersection of agency and:

In her groundbreaking book titled Women in the Nineteenth Century, Margaret Fuller suggests a remedy for the degradation of work for women stating, “Women are the best helpers of one another” (117). Fuller’s statement has reflections in many works written at the end of the nineteenth century such as Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, The Silent Partner (1871),  Alcott’s Work (18739, and Blake’s Fettered for Life (1874) all of which focus on sisterhood, solidarity, and feminine bond among women across class, race, and nationality as a survival mechanism within capitalist economy.

We are living in the Anthropocene, a geological epoch in which we wield power over the entire planet. But who, exactly, is the “we” in that sentence? As an imaginary, the Anthropocene allows “us” to understand “ourselves” as members of a species that is transforming “our” planet. As a material phenomenon, however, the Anthropocene divides “us” into disparate groups—whites and people of color, upper classes and working classes, men and women, citizens and refugees. How, in Bruno Latour’s terms, can we track the translations between nonhumans and humans? How, from Dipesh Chakrabarty’s perspective, can we straddle the thought rifts between the planetary and the global?

This roundtable will discuss practices of teaching the literary-cultural portrayal of modern global (ethno)nationalisms and the concurrent rise and proliferation of terrorism as well as the role that the “terror threat” plays in contemporary reactionary politics and policies. Our focus will be on the teaching of texts—both literary and cultural--written not by mainstream western authors and theorists, but by non-Western/diasporic writers and commentators so as to foreground the perspective of the Western Other(s).
