Ever since the inception of #MeToo, conversations have largely circled around the movement as it evolved and exists in the United States. Despite multiple sessions on #MeToo at multiple conferences, I failed to find any that specifically focuses on the reception, translation, and adaptation of #MeToo in non-Western and postcolonial contexts. To fill this gap, this session, “The Other #MeToos,” aims to explore how #MeToo, a popularly Western-centric feminist movement, translates to religiously, geographically, politically, and academically Othered places and Othered women.

A new preference for the production and consumption of lyric forms of poetry, over that of more narrative options like the epic, often coincided with a governing body’s establishment of courtly norms and practices. This trend is consistent across a multitude of seemingly disparate cultures. The popularity and refinement of the ghazal during the Ghaznavid dynasty and the sonnet at the Elizabethan court are just two examples of similar formal developments arising within different cultural contexts. Shorter lyrics were often formally rigorous, but also highly customizable, and many of these forms also called for a new emphasis on the construction and expression of self.

He experimented in several fields of creativity namely, song, dance, poetry, dramas, short stories, novels, novellas, essays, education, painting and social reformation to name a few. Even after 150 years of his birth, how or why do humankind across the globe still find Tagore universally relevant?  This panel aims to explore these diverse facets of Rabindranath Tagore as perceived from a contemporary perspective. The panel welcomes papers which examines Tagore’s works in comparison to other practitioners, either his contemporaries or in the contemporary society.

Women’s corpses, such as those of Snow White or Ophelia, are often depicted as a beautiful and passive objects, which has led scholars to posit cultural reflections concerning tacit assumptions in the link between femininity and death. In relation to modern literature and art, scholars such as Elizabeth Bronfen (Over Her Dead Body), Elizabeth Grosz (Volatile Bodies), Sarah Goodwin (Death and Representation) argue that dead women are an nexus of morbidity, alterity, and beauty that unconsciously encapsulates the anxiety of the inexpressible event of death, and, as such, dead women are given the value of the “other” in the most macabre fashion.

Since the biopolitical turn, scholars across disciplines have attempted to make sense of the encounter between life (bios) and politics. This attention paid to the topic of biopolitics shows a cultural ethos that revolves around an awareness of power connected to the body. This roundtable invites papers that analyze how literature engages with biopolitics, particularly in the conceptualizations and depictions of the body in relation to power in 20th- and 21st-century literature. Roundtable participants are encouraged to submit abstracts that engage with the following questions: “How is life (and the body) culturally inscribed with meaning and definition,” and further, “What is a consequence of that inscription?”

            Epic genre could be seen as what Mary Louis Pratt calls a "contact zone", a space in which diverse cultures "meet, clash and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power". It is a space where encounters give rise to new categories of gender, class, rule, and language. The concept of hybridity allows for the exploration of these spaces and voices that do not fit neatly into prescribed definitions.

Diana Wallace and Andrew Smith note that the Female Gothic has been an ever-shifting category since its introduction into literary vocabulary by Ellen Moers in 1976, asserting that the Female Gothic “is shaped by...national identity, sexuality, language, race, and history” (The Female Gothic, 10). Gothic scholarship has long demonstrated that the mode varies across national and continental borders particularly drawing out distinctions between the American and the British. However, less attention has been paid to the concept of age.
