PAMLA Panel: Comics of Babel: Exploring the Power of Multilingual Graphic Fictions

The travel memoir offers an opportunity to examine a number of issues in terms of creative non-fiction. Travel stories focus on individuals who become strangers to themselves when they exile themselves from the environmental and cultural factors that have defined them thus far in service of self-discovery. They link up with the grand Odysseus-like impulse of traditional and modern literature that can profoundly alter identity when they travel and write about their experiences. Topics to consider would include a discussion of three particular aspects of this kind of storytelling. First, we must discuss the idea of fiction vs. fact and try to decide how much of each is essential in terms of crafting biographical material.
Adaptations in Contemporary Scandinavian Screen Cultures
The Journal of Creative Writing Studies invites submissions of scholarship that examine the teaching, practice, theory, and history of creative writing. This peer-reviewed, open access journal is a publication of the Creative Writing Studies Organization. Submissions of up to 10,000 words (including Works Cited and Notes) are accepted. While the journal as a whole is committed to supporting submissions in all sections by writers from multiple perspectives, the Diversity and Inclusion section is specifically devoted to works that directly address race, ability, culture, class, language, and gender/sexuality difference as experienced and studied in the creative writing academic arena. This year's SAMLA theme, "Scandal! Literature and Provocation: Breaking Rules, Making Texts," asks us to consider how cultural texts challenge the establishment. From Aristophanes’s inclusive view of same-sex attraction in Plato's Symposium to the seventeenth-century memoirs of the transgender Spanish convent girl-cum-conquistador Catalina de Erauso and the fractured coming out narratives of the 2016 film Moonlight, discussions about queer identities have long been provocative. This year’s Queer Studies panel(s) welcomes submissions on research projects that explore how and why queer identities are seen as radical, rebellious, and revolutionary.

CFP for MLA 2021: Eugenics and the Body We are seeking submissions for our panel, entitled "Eugenics and the Body," at the Modern Language Association (MLA) Convention to be held on January 7-10, 2021 in Toronto, ON. This panel seeks to consider how eugenics—a discourse of the perfectibility of man that centers reproduction—influenced the literary construction of bodies in the broadest sense (literal, figurative, (non-)human, national, etc.). Please submit 300-word abstract for paper and 50-word bio.
Given the evident command of the celebrity in 20th- and 21st-century media cultures and following modern trends toward trans-medial and inter-generic production, this traditional session calls for papers that explore the relationships between celebrity and generic scandals. How have filmmakers, television writers, tabloid/entertainment journalists, novelists, essayists, biographers, memoirists, and other cultural creators depicted celebrity scandal while pushing the limits of their given genre or medium? While the 20th and 21st centuries are the focus of this call, media and literary scholars of all periods are welcomed to apply. History-bending is happily encouraged alongside genre-bending. Scandals could involve:
Recent scientific discoveries in climatology, animal cognition and microbiology have radically altered our conceptions of ourselves and the environment we live in, both on micro and macroscales. Zooming in on the human microbiome and out to the planetary ecosystem, or even further into infinite cosmic spaces, the sciences are revealing strange dynamics of human-nonhuman interconnectedness, doing away with the established anthropocentrism and the idea of human exceptionalism.
This special session will be focusing on the correlation between psychology, form, and subjectivity in the works of British experimental writer Ann Quin (1936-73), and is titled : 'Fragmented Psychology and Fractured Selfhoods in the Works of Ann Quin'. It is for Modern Language Association (MLA) conference at Toronto, Canada from January 7-10, 2021.

Marginalia and footnotes are their own genres, but most editors concentrate on the main body of a text. Yet material outside that text body, whether as marginalia or footnotes, can have great bearing on the meaning of the main document.
Marginalia and footnotes raise a number of questions:
* What is the function of such material?
* Who made the marks, and when, where, and why?
* As editors, what do we do with them?
CRIME AND COMPOSITION
This roundtable welcomes submissions showcasing the usage of crime to impart the goals of the English literature or composition classroom. Addressing the SAMLA 92 theme of Scandal! Literature and Provocation: Breaking Rules, Making Texts, we are interested in looking at crime as a heuristic or method of teaching. Examples include the following:

The Central American Literature permanent section of the Midwest Modern Language Association seeks proposals for the upcoming MMLA Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Nov 5-8, 2020). [sic] – a journal of literature, culture and literary translation invites submissions for the upcoming 20th issue. We accept:
2019 was a watershed moment for queer horror visibility, particularly in cinema: from Shudder’s announcement of their upcoming queer horror documentary to Rue Morgue ’s first-ever ‘Queer Fear’ special issue, and from the world’s largest study about horror-loving queers to the rapid proliferation of queer horror podcasts. With this increased focus and attention on the relationship between queerness and horror, we propose an edited collection focused on queer/queered horror that not only recasts a critical eye on the cinematic past, but also explores theoretical perspectives on and new queer readings of horror films of the post-millennial present.
Emotionally charged depictions of death play an important role in much contemporary media directed toward teen and young adult audiences. Across creative works as diverse as interactive digital games, graphic novels, short form serial narratives, television and films, young people gain opportunities to engage with representations of death that position the deceased as a multi-dimensional person whose loss is tragic and demands to be mourned. In some cases, such as the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why, and the major motion picture Me Before You, representations of death, dying, and the decision to end one’s own life have been subject to public outcry and criticism.
Submissions for our first issue (Harry Potter) will be open from February 1 until April 1. Submissions can focus on the Harry Potter books, films, other media, or any expressions of the fan cultures of Harry Potter, including fan fiction, art, sports, or fan communities of other kinds.
You may submit once per issue for each category (creative non-fiction and academic essays). We are not interested in publishing fan fiction or poetry.
Submissions must be 2500-7500 words and, if scholarly, must be in MLA citation format. Please use Times New Roman 12 pt font. Current undergraduates and graduate students in any major or field are eligible to submit, as are holders of master’s degrees.

Call for Proposals: Edited Collection: A Self to Recover: Negotiating Sylvia Plath and Disability
The conference seeks to explore the narratives of displacement and to demonstrate the validity of a cross-disciplinary approach which brings together the historical, cultural, social and literary expertise in the handling of text. The conference will particularly focus on time and space representations and on treatment of the theme of cultural ambivalence and identity conflict. The subject of displacement will be regarded as both a migration, voluntary or forced, and a sense of being socially or culturally “out of place”.

Modernism has its smart sets, not just Mencken’s but in Stein’s salons and Woolf’s Bloomsbury, and in the serious philosophical engagements (and antipathies) of T.S. Eliot, Dora Marsden, Samuel Beckett, and others. But how do “street-smarts” inform conversations about modernism’s epistemological and intellectual positions? How do the streets, with their marginal figures and spaces, refine critical views of what counts as knowing? How do the streets re-orient epistemology with a phenomenology of everyday things?
