Perseverance builds character.

How does perseverance come about? By rising through a struggle, whether it is a provoked or unprovoked event that questions one’s ability to endure and survive a hardship. It is through one’s suffering and survival of such hardships in life -whether physical or mental - that one is able to build upon their character, thus leading to hope.

We are able to see these modes of struggle and perseverance in various facets from ethnicity, gender, and politics, to name a few, and we would like to hear, learn, and share them in our publication.

Wednesday, November 14, 2018 - 9:00pm
Interdisciplinary Nineteenth-Century Studies
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, November 17, 2018

Ongoing public debate over politically charged public monuments reminds us how much is at stake in the shaping of cultural memory, whether through durable physical structures, portable or reproducible aesthetic works, or discursive representations. How were monumentality and the preservation of the past conceived in the nineteenth century? How might we reconceive our own ways of remembering the nineteenth century? We invite proposals for papers and panels that explore monuments in the broadest sense of the word—those from as well as those about the nineteenth century. We also welcome papers that consider the concepts of monumentality and/or memory as they pertain to humanistic disciplines and engage with nineteenth-century studies.

In her 1988 book A Burst of Light, Audre Lorde said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.” The concept of self-care, which arose through the activist practices specifically of marginalized groups, has been increasingly adopted and discussed by health care settings, non-profit organizations, commercial and marketing enterprises, and psychological approaches. National discourse around self-care has increased exponentially since the 2016 presidential election. Yet, few academics have explored the theory, implementation, and impacts of this concept.
