Per William Faulkner’s famous phrase, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” This is to say that the forms of social inequality that characterize contemporary life and drive contemporary activism are rooted in long histories of violence. Yet over time, as these histories extend not only throughout individual lives but also across generations, they can become so naturalized that they run the risk of being functionally invisible.

One of the greatest challenges in teaching online is developing meaningful student interaction. In evaluations of online classes, students consistently indicate that student/teacher interaction and student/student interaction can be improved. How do we either go beyond the traditional online tools such as the discussion board or extend those online tools to increase the interaction and sense of community in an online course? This roundtable seeks 10 minute presentations that highlight innovative projects to build connections among students, instructor, and content in the dislocated space of the online classroom. Please submit 250 word proposals by June 8, 2018, to Rich Hancuff, rhancuff@misericordia.edu.

Dr. Avishek Ray
deadline for submissions:
Sunday, July 8, 2018

The importance of religion in contemporary debates ranging from nationalism to its place in the public sphere is exceedingly being felt. Nations -- referred to as imagined communities (c.f. Anderson) -- speak to the profound need for both legitimacy and belonging(ness), often articulated through one’s religious vis-a-vis ethnic identities in the modern world. This volume will explore this issue by focusing on the relationships between religion, geo-politics and the articulation of nationalism in the context of South Asia.

Best Practices for Retention (Extended Deadline)

updated:

Anthony Dotterman/SAMLA
deadline for submissions:
Sunday, June 10, 2018

While university administrators have many ways to assess a program’s or department’s effectiveness, student retention is one of the more controversial measures.  Particularly, retention often seems inherently at odds with our roles as college professors since—fairly or not—issues of retention are conflated with concerns over grade inflation and academic rigor.  Yet, as studies show, universities lose students over the first two years of college for a variety of reasons: financial, the absence of strong academic mentoring and peer relationships, the strains of commuting, as well as family pressures and responsibilities that threaten to derail academic pursuits.

WORKING WOMEN SUFFRAGETTES' LIFE WRITING IN BRITAIN AND AMERICA

updated:
Tuesday, May 29, 2018 - 9:36pm
SAMLA
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, June 9, 2018

DEADLINE EXTENDED. While there has been interest in the suffrage movement in both America and England for many years now, one area that has not received as much scholarly attention is the analysis of Life Writing created by those within the movement. Both working- and middle-class women provide an intimate portrait of what it was like to fight for suffrage for so many years.  I propose a panel that examines the connections between suffragettes of different classes, ages, and nationalities as well as those in positions of power who supported them throughout. By May 30, please submit a 300-word abstract, brief biographical statement, and any AV requirements to Sarah N.

This panel examines the role of avant-garde women in confronting models of gender, domesticity and political practices safeguarded by patriarchal society. From the margins of vanguardism women effectively engaged in syndicalist and anarchist movements that reacted to state politics, while urging the importance of launching social reforms and radical art. This panel will thus provide an overview of artists who participated in a variety of experimental trends such as Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, Imagism, Vorticism, Dadaism and Surrealism, among others.

For a proposed panel at the annual meeting of the Renaissance Society of America 2019 (Toronto, 17 -19 March): I am seeking papers on early modern printers. Our modern sense of publishers as (more often than not) merely profiting from the creative agency of authors obscures the meaningful role early printers had in cultural production, politics (conservative and radical), the reception of major works, and the establishment of a public sphere. Printers sometimes simply sought sales, but they also often specialized and promoted particular agendas.
