If, as the current SAAS conference theme, “The Image and the Word”, suggests, “[o]ur 21st century stands under the aegis of the image” (Boletin 27), then the most significant guiding cultural image of twenty-first century America has to be the hauntingly repetitive film of domestic passenger jets colliding with the physical embodiment of twentieth-century US power, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre.

Ireland in Psychoanalysis 2: Irish Shame Venue: University at BuffaloDates: 28-29th September Call for Papers
If we can infer anything from the myth of our expulsion from Paradise, it is that we humans are, or ought to be, ashamed of ourselves. Awareness of shame seems inherent to our social existence, and forms one intractable legacy of our self-awareness as a species. As self-conscious animals, we see ourselves in ways most animals do not, and we do not like all that we see.

Indigenous identity is connected to place, perhaps rooted most strongly in the relationship between place and self rather than simply the location itself. In the chapter “A Better World Becoming: Placing Critical Indigenous Studies” appearing in Aileen Moreton’s essay collection Critical Indigenous Studies: Engagements in First World Locations, Daniel Heath Justice explains that, “Belonging is about being woven into the fabric of the land and its legacies, accepting the knowledge that your future is a shared future . . .” (26).

Octavia Butler and Religion

Octavia E. Butler burst onto the science fiction literary scene with the publication of her first novel, The Patternmaster, in 1976. Her work continued to transform and develop the field in remarkable ways until her death in 2006. From creating worlds of powerful telepaths, alien beings looking to “trade” with humans to advance their civilization or creating a religion that fosters and encourages its followers to believe that “God is change,” Butler’s talent is astounding and groundbreaking.

EXTENDED DEADLINE

Call for paper: Aletria v. 28, n.3 (2018) – Early Modern English Literature

Early modern English authors (c. 1453-1789) wrote in a period of unprecedented national and international political, cultural, social, religious, and scientific changes. Literature in English across a range of traditional and alternative genres reflected, resisted, and redefined these developments. We invite papers that identify and analyse the many forms of evidence of the literary engagement with transformative issues, events, and axes within and outside of the British Isles.
