Across the African diaspora, art was a form of expression and liberation at times of widespread cultural oppression, enabling artists of color to resist the tradition of silencing while preserving their histories, traditions, and more in ways that could be passed down intergenerationally. While much art worked to fulfill a political purpose by pushing for equality and liberty in oppressive cultures, other works aimed at achieving liberation by way of celebrating Black cultural forms, from the cutting-edge music of Erykah Badu to that of Janelle Monae.

Much like cinema worldwide, Bengali language cinema has evolved through periods of artistic highs and scarred by moments of decay and decapitation. From the euphoria of the cinematic masterclass brought to life by Satyajit Ray, showcased in the Apu Trilogy (Pather Panchali [1955], Aparajito [1956] and Apur Sansar [1959])  to the intensely political canvas of Mrinal Sen’s Padatik (1973) and Ek Din Pratidin (1979) the visuality of entire spectrum of Bengal’s social classes – bhadralok to the unseen refugees of Partition – emerge as moments of intense visual engagement.

Prison is used world-wide as a form of punishment or detention for men, women and children, within a functioning criminal justice system, and its use can be traced back to the rise of the earliest forms of state or social organisation in which humans have lived. Prisons are variously known as jails, gaols, penitentiaries, detention centres, correctional centres, and remand centres. They can be used as a tool of political repression, or a means of detaining large groups of civilians during times of war.
