Academic articles for the BFS Journal should be between 2500 and 6000 words. We prefer nearer the former, as this is about the size of a conference paper. Please don't use footnotes in your submissions.

All contributors are sent a complimentary copy of the print version and the electronic version.

Panel for SAMLA: Mothering as Resistance: Creating/Subverting Networks of Care as Acts of Resistance

updated:
Friday, June 1, 2018 - 9:15am
SAMLA 90
deadline for submissions:
Friday, June 15, 2018

In summer of 2017, Wonder Woman challenged cultural assumptions of box office superheroes and positioned motherhood as an integral part of a feminist resistance. But motherhood as an act of resistance began long before Wonder Woman’s re-introduction to mainstream pop culture. Motherhood is often used as a rhetorical strategy in anti-violence movements, but motherhood is also used to justify violence as resistance. This panel invites submissions that consider the role of the mother as central to individual, local, national, and global activisms and resistance movements in literature, media portrayals, online communities, grassroot campaigns and more.

Excellence, Innovation and Ingenuity in Honors Education (2018)

Call for chapter proposals (contracted book).

Many Honors Colleges in the US are seeking to be innovative, are seeking to map honors education onto the 21st Century. Not all truly succeed. Perhaps it is a failure of vision, perhaps a failure of leadership, or perhaps it is that true innovation means a rare combination of national and global understanding and experience, combined with wider experiences in many fields of human endeavor that make up a true honors experience. A new project will assist in exploring the possibilities for honors education!

Per William Faulkner’s famous phrase, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” This is to say that the forms of social inequality that characterize contemporary life and drive contemporary activism are rooted in long histories of violence. Yet over time, as these histories extend not only throughout individual lives but also across generations, they can become so naturalized that they run the risk of being functionally invisible.
