For a special issue of Library Quarterly (University of Chicago Press)
that we are editing, we are seeking papers on the theme of the "Library as
Place." The journal is interested in publishing papers that relate to the
historical and/or contemporary place of the library within its community
of interest, the role of the library as an important locus within the
public sphere, the influence of the library as a public or civic space
within contemporary urban or rural landscapes, and the uses made of
library spaces by various clienteles and the public in general. In
particular, we would encourage submission of papers that discuss the
meaning(s) of the library in the lives of its users and user groups, and

Book covers have long been the sole preserve of collectors and art
historians. This collection will draw a new range of disciplinary
perspectives - cultural studies, business and marketing, the history of the
book and literary studies - to make sense of book covers in the wider
context of publishers' publicity and the marketing of books.

Original essays examining the emergence, evolution, and consequences of
book publishing in composition studies are sought for a collection titled
_Book Culture in Composition Studies_. The editors are interested in
contributions that address the rise of the book in composition scholarship
from theoretical perspectives (e.g., materialist, feminist,
multicultural), various locations in the academic hierarchy (e.g.,
graduate students, adjunct faculty, tenure-track and tenured faculty) and
the publishing industry (commercial and academic presses), and in relation
to composition's institutional, departmental, and disciplinary history.

Alphabetical Orders: New Histories of Literacy

Essays on Canadian Writing invites submissions of manuscripts for a =
special issue on textualizing orature and orality--the transformation of =
spoken, chanted, or sung vocalizations into printed or virtual text--and =
the ethical, political, aesthetic, and pedagogical issues raised by such =
textualizations. Some topics that might be addressed include:

  a.. textualized orature: works composed and passed on orally until =
transcribed or otherwise mediated (e.g. the work of anthropologists such =
as Marius Barbeau and Wendy Wickwire or poets like Robert Bringhurst);

The Journal of the William Morris Society is planning a special Winter 2003
edition on 'Morris and the Book Arts'. Articles are thus solicited on any
aspect of Morris's relationship to, or influence upon book art and design.
Possible topics might include: Morris and calligraphy; the Kelmscott Press,
specific editions of note of Morris's work; Morris' relationship to other
Victorian book illustrators and designers; the Kelmscott legacy and
influence; other Morris-influenced book illustrators, designers or binders.
