Comics are a medium that has transformations in both form and content. Their form centers on the transition of one image to another in sequence; as with any narrative, it often focuses on the development of a dynamic character, and in superhero stories, with the additional metamorphosis of a person’s very body and identity.

"The Fantastic or Mythical is a Mode available at all ages for some readers; for others, at none. At all ages, if it is well used by the author and meets the right reader, it has the same power: to generalise while remaining concrete, to present in palpable form not concepts or even experiences but whole classes of experience, and to throw off irrelevances. But at its best it can do more; it can give us experiences we have never had and thus, instead of commenting on life, can add to it."
C. S. Lewis, "Sometimes Fairy Stories May Say Best What's to Be Said" from the book On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature

We are seeking original, previously unpublished essays for a collection tentatively titled The Science Fiction Western: Representation of Female Characters in the Late Twentieth and Twenty-first Century Media. In reference to historians' accounts of the frontier, Susan Armitage writes that "Women are either absent or incidental to the story". While women may have been attracted to the Frontier Myth concept, they are infrequently the main focus of American Western stories. Adult males, however, appeared prominently within literature in connection to this myth.

The concept of jouissance as a total, limitless, excessive enjoyment on the one hand and as a type of castration, operating beyond the pleasure principle, on the other is one of the most fascinating elements of Lacanian psychoanalysis. Jouissance is linked to the body and to castration through language; it is linked to the (unattainable) Other, to prohibition and anxiety, and to the illusion of transgression. However, jouissance should be regarded not only as part of the subject's struggle to balance himself between excess, desire, and castration, but also as a concept that can tell us something about the "mental state" of a society in crisis.
