The Bane of Their Existence: Making Interdisciplinary Humanities Matter

At many colleges and universities, there exist general education requirements in the so-called “interdisciplinary humanities.” Most students, even those majoring in the humanities, don’t look forward to these classes—which can be large and unwieldy—and they don’t regard them as especially important in their own degree trajectories. Students seem to think that they won’t learn anything, that they will have to endure lecture after lecture, write a couple of papers, take a final, and forget the rest. And, all too often, professors and graduate students saddled with the task of teaching these courses feel the same way. What might we do about this? Are there ways to make general education courses in the humanities interesting and engaging for all involved?

We are issuing a Call for Proposals for scholarly and creative submissions for an international, interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference entitled “Digesting Discourses: Taste, Appetite, and Consumption,” to be held at Indiana University—Bloomington, March 4-5, 2016. Join us for our 14th annual conference hosted by the graduate students of the IU Department of English.

Daily life is ordered by many kinds of consumption, all of which influence the way we produce and comprehend meaning within the world. “Digesting Discourses” invites scholars from the humanities, sciences, law, and public health to explore the diverse meanings of taste, appetite, and consumption across texts, methodologies, and time periods. What do metaphors of eating and digestion reveal about the materiality of knowledge? How do aesthetic and physical consumption differ? What does the critical history of material consumption reveal about patterns and power dynamics of cultural exchange? How do genre, discipline, and methodology impact the representation and study of these topics?

full name / name of organization:
Joel Sodano, University at Albany & Michael Brown, University of Aberdeen
contact email:
jsodano@albany.edu, m.brown@abdn.ac.uk

This call for proposals is inspired by the versatile, prescient and even protean prose of Dr. Swift’s most well-known work, Gulliver’s Travels (1726). If Gulliver had a “tenure home” it would definitely be in the department of English; however, because of its relevance to so many disciplinary fields (economics, history, philosophy, to name the most obvious) Gulliver’s Travels is finding itself in an increasingly interdisciplinary range of college courses. This CFP seeks a variety of pedagogy-oriented submissions that give insight into the ways Gulliver’s Travels is taught in higher education.
