From the anonymous Middle English Court of Sapience to Nicole Oresme's Livre du ciel et du monde to the lavishly illustrated copies of Pliny's Natural History produced for the Visconti family, medieval scientific discourse was often inflected by – and constructed around – literary, musical, and artistic forms present at court. This conference invites abstracts on what it means to "do science at court" in the late medieval period, particularly in the context of literature, music, and the arts.

2016 Symposium on Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Saint Louis University

Recent studies of the Pearl manuscript and its poems reveal potential for exploring new and unusual analyses of both manuscript and text. Arthur Bahr, William Storm, and others have especially suggested that poems in the Pearl-poems often reward close readings at the word and phrase level. Such readings, though some may seem unusual at first, may in fact be quite tenable in the context of each poem and of the others in the entire manuscript. Such readings can also affirm scholars' interest in puns and other forms of wordplay on the part of the poet(s) who wrote the Pearl-poems.

Natures 2016: an interdisciplinary environmental humanities conference

Our theme invites exploration of the habitats and/or hazards of any aspect of humanities studies. Papers may explore the conference theme as applied to the texts of humanities studies (e.g. the hazardous spaces of "Jane Eyre"), or the various crises that threaten the material world now or in the past (e.g. popular culture depictions of pollution). Presenters are invited to (re)frame the terms of the theme in ways relevant to their projects.
Topics may include, but are not limited to:
•Close readings of texts (written, physical, and/or visual), from any period
•Domesticity, urbanity, public/private, setting in literature, history, art, and popular culture
•Pollution, scarcity, competition over resources

The eleventh annual meeting of the Georgia Philological Association (GPA) will convene at the Middle Georgia State University Conference Center at 100 College Station Drive, Macon, Georgia on Friday, May 20, 2016. We invite proposals for session topics, panel discussion topics, and scholarly papers in English on any subjects relating to American, British, French, Hispanic, Russian, German, or Slavic literature or language, as well as composition, philosophy, history, translation, the general humanities, interdisciplinary studies, and pedagogy. Reading times for individual paper presentations will be strictly limited to 15 minutes (approximately eight double-spaced typed pages).

The graduate students in Spanish and Portuguese at UPenn are pleased to announce their graduate conference focused on the transnational and trans-historical topic of commons, community and sovereignty. It is a pleasure to also mention that Dr. Silvia Federici (Caliban and the Witch, Revolution at Point Zero) will be the keynote speaker. Additionally, the department of Spanish and Portuguese is able to provide three travel grants up to $300 each for graduate student participants.
