In his notable work, Deschooling Society, Ivan Illich posited that schooling in modern societies and economies needed a radical reimagining:

"A good educational system should have three purposes: it should provide all who want to learn with access to available resources at any time in their lives; empower all who want to share what they know to find those who want to learn it from them; and, finally, furnish all who want to present an issue to the public with the opportunity to make their challenge known" (75-76).

The Lehigh English Department's third annual Literature and Social Justice Graduate Conference will take place at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, on March 10-11, 2017. This year’s conference theme is Borders and Violence. We invite diverse literary and pedagogical approaches to this theme, including papers that respond to the following questions: How do borders, whether physical, linguistic, economic, etc., signal or enact forms of violence? Conversely, how do borders function as sites of resistance? What forms can resistance to borders and/or violence take?  How does violence at sites of cultural difference affect communities and individuals? This violence might be physical, emotional, metaphorical, linguistic, cultural, judicial, etc.

If you are attending NeMLA (Baltimore, Maryland: March 23, 2017) and would like a gentle introduction to computer-assisted explorations of your favorite digitized texts, consider enrolling in our hands-on workshop. In our experience, scholars who might like to perform computational analysis in their areas of expertise and/or wish to teach their students how to do so become discouraged too early in the game. This workshop will provide hands-on exposure to and practice with the free, open-source, web-based tool Lexos, including course materials that we have used in our interdisciplinary courses.

Abstracts for our annual meeting in beautiful Hilton Head, SC, are due November 1.  The College English Association invites you to join us in exploring the idea of the island.  The Sea Pine shell ring, over 15,000 years old, once sheltered Native Americans who occupied Hilton Head seasonally.  Gullah and Geechee culture emerged on the island as freed slaves sought sanctuary there at the end of the Civil War.  How, then, are islands in literature and film, as in life, places of desperate refuge and welcome escape?  What respites do they provide?

Most often, borders are thought of as spaces of division that, according to Gloria Anzaldúa, “distinguish us from them.” However, borders also create their own spaces, as “two worlds merging to form a third country — a border culture [where] duality is transcended.” The presence of multiple languages and dialects in border contexts and the language experiences of linguistically diverse writers provides teachers and students with opportunities and challenges as they engage writing in personal, social, educational, professional, and community situations where audience, purpose, and language vary.

The University of South Florida is pleased to announce a call for presentations for its Symposium on “Re-Shaping the Future of Graduate Education in the Humanities.”

There is no shortage of experts declaring the death of the Humanities on university campuses throughout the United States. Politicians question the “value” of a humanities-based graduate education while students uneasily balance a need for professionalization with a desire for intellectual exploration. A defeatism has often hampered students and professors as they both struggle to understand the shifting dynamics of graduate education in the Humanities.
