A Proposed Session on Bernard Shaw at the 2012 Midwest Modern Language Association Convention November 8-11, 2012. Cincinnati, Ohio.

The proposed session seeks papers on Shaw's writings that dovetail with the conference theme of "Debt." Possible topics could include:

*representations of borrowers and lenders, borrowing and lending, in Shaw's plays

*debts Shaw and/or his plays owe to other thinkers, writers, and/or political figures

*Shavian debts accrued by contemporary plays, playwrights, and/or theorists

Starting from the reappraisal of literary translation that Susan Bassnett carried out at the beginning of the eighties, comparative literature as a discipline started re-evaluating its relation to this ancient practice, considering that more than once the fundamental contribution of this practice to comparative studies had been taken for granted. To a certain extent, it could be claimed that translation is a requirement and a condition of possibility for comparative literature. For this reason, Journal 452ºF decided that the monographic section of issue number seven will describe the current state of affairs in translation studies and comparatism.

Crowd control in the Renaissance

This seminar will discuss the notion of "crowd control" from various viewpoints, distinguishing "crowd controllers" and the "crowds controlled" in different loci : on the stage, in the Church, the royal entourage, urban/rural milieus, in the British Isles or elsewhere.

The seminar, which will take place during the September 2012 ESSE conference in Istanbul, seeks to build on ideological and Foucauldian-based approaches to notions and instances of rebellion and social control, favored by critics in the 80s and 90s, by taking into account recent interdisciplinary research on manuscripts, law, iconography, film and performance studies, among others.

Nation Building: Craft and Contemporary American Culture

Paper submissions from senior and emerging scholars are invited for this symposium, which will examine craft's increasingly urgent role within contemporary American culture. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the Renwick Gallery, American Art's branch museum for contemporary craft and decorative arts, this program seeks to broaden the dialogue surrounding craft's recent histories, and to articulate rapid changes to the field since the advent of the current century.
