Values in Literature and the Value of Literature, 12−14 September 2012, Helsinki, Finland

updated:

The Finnish Doctoral Programme for Literary Studies

Debates on the value of literature have been recurrent in the long history of literary cultures. The centrality of literature as a cultural phenomenon has provoked discussions about its value as such as well as about the values it promotes and the uses it can be put to serve. Even the very attempts that were made to disengage aesthetic from ethical values ultimately served to accentuate the debate. But the issues debated and the answers given are subject to change and we may well ask how the matter should be seen today. What challenges do our globalised and multimedialised culture bring to the evaluation of literature? How do the new ways of reading literature within the academia affect our evaluations?

[UPDATE] William Dean Howells Panels at the American Literature Association Conference, San Francisco, CA, May 24-27, 2012

The WIlliam Dean Howells Society

The William Dean Howells Society welcomes submissions to round out two panels at the 2012 American Literature Association in San Francisco, which is being held over Memorial Day weekend.

Panel 1: The Late Howells

We are looking for papers that focuses on Howells's late work. Though scholarship on his novels through A Hazard of New Fortunes is abundant, Howells remained prolific until his death in 1920. Why has his work after 1890 gotten relatively little attention? What works deserve another (or even a first) look? What of Howells' work as a playwright? Or his work in the short story genre? How does ignoring the late Howells' alter his position in American literary history, or perhaps even complicate American literary history?

CFP: MOB/RIOT CULTURE & PUBLIC PROTEST IN THE 21st CENT.

New technologies, new ways of communication, and, in some cases, new approaches to old problems and debates have emerged with the new millennium. With these changes, old tensions resurface and new conflicts arise. The past decade, and more recently in these past months, we have witnessed how these tensions create a variety of public protests and riots. This proposed collection aims to examine these acts: how and why they were initiated; how they have impacted their respective local, national, or even global communities; and how individual citizens, various groups and organizations, and even governments have responded to these acts.
