CFP: The popular market of Ethnic Toys (3/15/05; LASA March 15-18, 2006)

Looking for papers which examine a relatively new cultural product on the market-homies and mijos-in relationship to how or why they are consumed by the general population. Homies and Mijos are small 2-inch plastic latino/a dolls sold in vending machines across the country. Their images have provoked anger and curiosity in a collecting nation. I am looking for papers which question their significance as a new collector's item or toy for both Anglos and Latinos. Additionally, how do these toys or collector's items serve to represent latino/a or Chicano/a ideals and understand further the complicated notion of latino/a identity in United States consumer society. The production element of these dolls, their consumption by a mass audience, their relevance as subjects of ethnicity further offer a comprehensive examination of culture today and the vital part latinos play in that culture.

Any aspect of collecting ethnic dolls or toys (Puerto Rican Barbie, Hispanic G.I. Joe etc.) will also be examined for possible inclusion for a panel into LASA 2006.
