Eye-Cons: Illusions in Word and Image

Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May 2006, University of Dundee, Scotland

The Thirteenth International Scottish Word and Image Group (SWIG)
Conference is to be held in Dundee on May 12th and 13th 2006, and will
examine the theme of illusion. As ever, the focus will be on the
interaction of word and image. Suggested themes include: magic;
virtuality; the mechanics of viewing and interpreting; defamiliarisation
and reading habits; how these habits are manipulated to create illusions
and "trick effects"; optics; chimaeras; ekphrasis; the role of
delusions, allusions, emblems, tropes, and metaphor in creating
unexpected contrasts and associations; any kind of illusion, including
the auditory. Underlying the conference will be an interest in how the
normative processes of perception and cognition can be challenged or
undermined in art, literature, film, animation, and other forms of
representation.

In keeping with previous SWIG conferences we are primarily interested in
discussing, from many disciplinary perspectives, the nature and
implications of the interaction of words and images in works of art,
literature and popular culture. It is anticipated that papers will
continue to reflect the diversity of interests and disciplines that have
characterised our past twelve Conferences and membership of SWIG, and
will include literary and cultural studies, history, architecture, the
visual arts, ethnography, drama and film studies, psychology and
linguistics. In addition, we plan to have an exhibition accompanying the
conference, and suggestions for this are also welcomed.

Preliminary proposals for papers and expressions of interest in
attending the Thirteenth Conference should be sent to us at the address
below by January 31st 2006.
