Call for Papers

We invite paper and panel proposals on any aspect of
British and/or American imperialism in Africa, the
Caribbean, Central America, and the Middle East (from
the eighteenth century to the present day). Proposals
from all disciplines are welcome, including: History;
Politics; Economics; Language(s) and Literature; Media
Studies; Law; Social Science; Gender Studies; Cultural
Studies; Religious Studies; Geography; the Sciences.
We particularly welcome contributions that compare
and/or contrast British and United States policies,
practices, and legacies. Areas of interest include,
but are not restricted to, issues of:

• Formal and informal modes of imperialism and
colonization
• Environment and resource exploitation
• War, genocide, and humanitarian intervention
• Corporations and the movements of national and
global capital
• Mapping and borders
• Labour and class relations
• Public memory (archives, monuments, museums…)
• Race, sex, and gender
• Religion
• Writing and narrative
• Alliances, including political/cultural relations
between Britain and the United States
• Anti-colonial resistance, revolution, and insurgency

Please send 300-word abstracts to
empire_at_post.queensu.ca by January 20, 2006. Written
expressions of interest are expected by October 20,
2005.
