CFP: Cinematic Homesick Blues (10/15/06; SASA,
2/14/07-2/18/07)

This panel for the Southern American Studies Association
(SASA) will explore filmic uses of the blues and southern
music as an ethnic and/or regional signifier. Of particular
interest is the blues as signifier not only of place but of
time, i.e., blues as signifier for nostalgia and/or the
past. Other areas of interest include but are not limited
to: the filmic relationship between visual images and the
blues, diegetic versus nondiegetic uses of the blues, and
transcultural uses of the blues.

Please submit paper proposals (of 250 words) by October 15,
2006 to Deborah Barker, Department of English, University of
Mississippi, University, MS 38677 or email to
dbarker_at_olemiss.edu . If
you would like to join the SASA, please go to:

The Southern American Studies Association (SASA) is
inviting paper or complete panel proposals for its biannual
meeting to be hosted by the University of Mississippi,
February 14-18, 2007 in conjunction with the annual Living
Blues Symposium. The theme of the conference is "Blues
Tunes / Blues Texts: Music, Cultures and Literature in the
Global South." This truly interdisciplinary meeting that
brings together scholars of literature, culture and music
with musicians, radio industry insiders and fans of the
blues will consider ways in which literature and music shape
the living cultures of the global, post-regional South.
