Studies Association Conference in Long Beach, CA (November 1-4, 2007).

Visions of Modernism: Interference and Intersections Between Literary
and Visual Culture

Panel Description:
A treatment of modernist aesthetics is incomplete without an
understanding of how literary culture intersects with visual
culture. While there have been many studies that treat literary and
visual culture as complimentary, like Michael North's recent Camera
Work: Photography and the Twentieth-Century Word, we are interested
in developing an account of the intersections between modernist
literary and visual culture that does not view all aesthetic,
generic, and technological developments as progressively
intertwined. We are particularly interested in the tensions between
literary and visual culture that might illuminate crucial differences
between the literary and visual arts in modernism. Does literature
follow in the wake of movements like Cubism, Dada, and Surrealism?
Or do avant-garde literary aesthetics inspire new developments in
visual culture? Does modernist literature resist new visual
technologies like photography, film, and television, or do new visual
technologies intertwine with literary history?

Abstracts that deal with the intersection of modernist literature and
visual culture are welcome. We are especially interested in work
that focuses on a particular visual genre, such as photography, film,
painting, etc., and its connection to a modernist literary text, or
work that offers a reading of one text that uses both literary and
visual components.

Possible topics may include but are not limited to:
-Literary and visual work for American New Deal projects
-Film, television, and other adaptations of modernist literary works
-Photography and journalism
-Formalist visual criticism

Please submit abstract (250 words), contact information, and a brief
CV by March 30, 2007 to Daniel Worden (dworden_at_cca.edu).
