CFP: Theology and Religion in Robert A. Heinlein (3/31/07; 7/6/07-7/8/07)

  Call for Papers

Robert A. Heinlein Centennial Event and Academic Conference
  July 6-8, 2007
  Kansas City, MO

  Submission deadline: March 31, 2007

We invite abstracts for papers, roundtable discussions, and presentation/lectures on any topic related to the representation of theological and religious matters in the works of novelist and futurist Robert A. Heinlein.

Heinlein achieved fame (or perhaps infamy) with his controversial depictions of various religions, real and imaginary. Was he an atheist, an agnostic, or a true believer whose "impatience with human institutions" forced him to mock the institution while still honoring what it stood for?

CFP: Autism Texts (4/15/07; SAMLA, 11/9/07-11/11/07)

Mark Osteen

The explosion of interest in autism and its controversiesâ€"the roles of
vaccinations, genetics, environmental toxins, and the competing claims
by various clinical schoolsâ€"has brought a tide of new poetic, fictional,
nonfictional, and cinematic texts. This swelling library includes texts
by both autistic and neurotypical artists.

For two panels at the 2007 SAMLA convention in Atlanta, Nov. 9-11, I
seek two different sorts of papers: 1) critical analyses of novels,
films, autobiographies, memoirs or poetry written by or about autism, or
that use identifiably “autistic” forms or structures; 2) creative
nonfiction in which autism figures as a major element.

Call for Papers
  Submission deadline: March 31, 2007

We invite abstracts for papers, roundtable discussions, and presentation/lectures on any topic related to the representation of women in the works of novelist and futurist Robert A. Heinlein.

Some critics and readers have lauded Heinlein as a feminist, applauding his strong female characters and representations of marriages as partnerships rather than dictatorships. Others, however, have pegged him as the opposite--or, most confusingly, a little of both. Most have a strong feeling one way or the other.
