versity of Leeds, 30th November 2007.=0A =0AThe study of digression in lite=
rature has been growing in recent years, and digressive strategies have bee=
n recognised in the work of writers from Cervantes and Sterne, to Calvino, =
Sebald and Saramago, amongst others. This conference aims to uncover and di=
scover the different strategies of digression that have been used by variou=
s authors in prose fiction, poetry, and drama. We will discuss whether ther=
e can be a definitive theory of digression, and explore the digressive stra=
tegies of particular writers, including the desired and actual effects of t=
heir writing on their readers.=0A =0AThe following guest speakers have been=
 confirmed:=0ADr. Olivia Santovetti (currently University of Cambridge, Dep=
artment of Italian) and Dr. Heather Sears (University of Leeds, Staff and D=
epartmental Development Unit) will be leading a session on textual analysis=
 and conference participation.=0A =0AProf. Jonathan Long (University of Dur=

esearch postgraduate students working in English Literature or Modern Langu=
ages are invited to submit proposals of 200-250 words for academic papers o=
f 15-20 minutes in length. Papers may deal with any aspect of the theory an=
d criticism of digressive literature, and may discuss the work of authors w=
riting in any language. All papers must be delivered in English, and quotat=
ions and textual references should also be provided in English first.=0A =
=0AAreas of consideration might include:=0AWhat is the history of digressiv=
e literature? =0AHow do we define digressive literature? =0AHow have strate=
gies of digression been developed by different authors? And for what purpos=
es?=0AWhat is the relationship between digression and rhetoric?=0AWhat are =
the effects of such strategies on readers?=0ATo what extent does digressive=
 literature mirror the human mind? =0AHow does the narrative standpoint inf=
luence the potential for digression in a work of literature?=0AAbstracts an=
