Debating the Difference: Gender, Representation and Self-Representation

Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th September 2007, University of Dundee, Scotland

An interdisciplinary event hosted by the Scottish Word and Image Group (SWIG) and the Women, Culture and Society Programme (WCS)

The overall aim of this conference will be to generate a nuanced and critical dialogue for assessing constructions of gender in text and image via a multi-disciplinary approach relating literary and visual media, as well as theory and practice. In addition, an exhibition will accompany the conference. It is our intention that selected papers will be published in a themed collection.

Proposals should be c.300 words for papers lasting 20 minutes and should directly address issues of gender, representation and self-representation in word and/or image. The deadline for proposals is 22nd June 2007. Possible topics for consideration include the following:

● Inscribing the body: male and female bodies in literary and visual culture
● As others see us: representations of men by women / women by men
● Women and self-representation in literature and/or the visual arts
● Objectification, commodification, circulation: images and the gendering of cultural production
● Illustrating gender: visual depictions of gender
● Performing gender
● Reinforcing the norm? the social and political power of gendered images
