The recent appearance in English translation of two volumes by the late novelist S. Yizhar
provides an opportunity to reassess not only this quintessentially Israeli author but also the
larger questions of modern Hebrew and contemporary Israeli literature(s) in their historical,
social, and formal dimensions. This symposium--which will feature distinguished scholars from
the U.S., U.K., and Israel--will therefore be devoted both to Yizhar's achievement and legacy, as
well as to a broader consideration of Israeli writing in light of contemporary critical and cultural
theory. We welcome participants to present on topics such as:

Yizhar's Literary Achievement
Influence and Anxiety of Influence Between Yizhar and His Literary Descendants
Periodization and Canonicity in Israeli Literature
Relationships and Discontinuities Among Literary Forms in Israeli Literature
Problems of Translating Hebrew Literature
Modern Hebrew and the "Minor" Languages of Israeli Literature
Zionism and the Minority Cultures of Contemporary Israel
Israeli Literature and Its Counterparts in Other Jewish Literatures
Israeli Literature and the Formation or Critique of National Culture
The Position of the Reader in Contemporary Israeli Writing

will be a stimulating and engaged consideration of Israeli literature, past, present, and future.
