“New” and “Alternative” Texts in Young Adult Literature

This panel seeks to investigate “new” and “alternative” texts for
adolescents by exploring television, film, reality programming, online
communities, video games, and other nontraditional genres as they exist
independently or in conversation with more traditional texts. We invite
participants to explore theoretical approaches to “new” and “alternative”
texts, examine the ways these texts function, and theorize the ways these
texts might fit within the field of young adult literature.

Participants are encouraged to explore:
• Definitions and (de)constructions of the terms “new”
and/or “alternative” as they relate to the field
• The way reality television represents, defines, and influences young
adults and young adult literature
• Emerging forums which call for literature, poetry, and film produced
for and published by young adults
• The long tradition and rising popularity of “teen” television
• How more traditional texts use online blogs, video games, and
other “alternative” texts to supplement their narratives
• Theoretical approaches to “new” and “alternative” texts
• The role “new” and “alternative” texts take within the narratives of
young adult literature

Please address questions or abstracts to Melissa Sara Smith at
mssmit4_at_ilstu.edu or Illinois State University, Department of English,
Campus Box 4240, Normal, IL 61790-4240. Abstracts should be 200-300 words
and must be submitted by April 15, 2008.
