The 14th Annual Southern Writers, Southern Writing is a University of
Mississippi Graduate Student Conference held in conjunction with the Annual
Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference.
The Graduate Students in the Departments of English and Southern Studies
invite you to submit abstracts exploring Southern culture. Accepted
submissions will be presented in Oxford, Mississippi, July 17th-19th, 2008.
 The keynote speaker will be John T. Edge, director of the Southern
Foodways Alliance and author of numerous books on Southern cuisine,
including Fried Chicken: An American Story.

Topics for papers or panels are not restricted to literature. They may include:

Submissions are sought for a special issue of Studies in the Humanities titled “The Artist as Public
Intellectual: a Fresh Look at Twentieth-Century’s ‘Unacknowledged Legislators’.” This special issue
revisits Percy B. Shelley’s claim that artists are the unacknowledged legislators of the world; using
hindsight, we want to explore the question if and how activist artists, i.e., those whose work runs
from political essay to fiction, poetry, or drama, have lived up to Shelley’s ideal. Some examples of
politicized writers include Octavio Paz (Mexico), Bertold Brecht (Germany), George Orwell (England),
Rebecca West (England), Mulk Raj Anand (India), and Lin Yutang (China). Contributors should use

_Transformative Works and Cultures_ (TWC) is a Gold Open Access
international peer-reviewed journal published by the Organization for
Transformative Works edited by Kristina Busse and Karen Hellekson.

TWC publishes articles about popular media, fan communities, and
transformative works, broadly conceived. We invite papers on all related
topics, including but not limited to fan fiction, fan vids, mashups,
machinima, film, TV, anime, comic books, video games, and any and all
aspects of the communities of practice that surround them. TWC’s aim is
twofold: to provide a publishing outlet that welcomes fan-related topics,
and to promote dialogue between the academic community and the fan community.

The Performance Studies Focus Group at the Association of Theatre in
Higher Education (ATHE) conference invites submissions of papers for its
Emerging Scholars’ Panel. The theme of the conference is Difficult
Dialogues: Theatre and the Art of Engagement, and it takes place at the
Grand Hyatt Hotel in Denver, Colorado from 31 July to 3 August 2008.
