Call for papers: 1960’s Hollywood and JFK

This proposed session is for the interdisciplinary conference, “John F.
Kennedy: History, Memory, Legacy” to be held on the University of North
Dakota’s campus September 25-27, 2008.

President John F. Kennedy visited Grand Forks, North Dakota on September
25, 1963. He toured the city, greeted its citizens, and spoke at the
University of North Dakota, talking about issues that are still vital
today. He spoke out for conserving natural resources and protecting the
environment. He argued for economic development and addressed the struggle
between democracy and totalitarianism. He also emphasized the importance
of education and public service. The University granted Kennedy an
honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Tragically, less than two months later, the
35th President of the United States was assassinated in Dallas. To
commemorate the 45th anniversary of that visit, the University of North
Dakota will be hosting an interdisciplinary conference relating to the life
and times of John F. Kennedy from September 25 to 27, 2008, in Grand Forks,
ND. President Kennedy's Special Counsel & Adviser, and Speechwriter,
Theodore Sorenson will be one of the keynote speakers for the conference.

This proposed session is meant to investigate the cultural milieu of John
F. Kennedy’s life and presidency and to explore the topic of Hollywood as
an influence on JFK and Camelot. We are especially interested in papers
that investigating the following issues:
 
• Marilyn Monroe
• Hollywood culture
• Jackie Kennedy as America’s starlet
• the Hollywood film industry as political player

Please send abstracts of 200-250 words to Rebecca Weaver-Hightower at
jfkconference_at_und.nodak.edu by April 11, 2008. Proposals should be
submitted by e-mail, with the proposal in the message text (do not send
attachments) and with the proposed session title identified.
