Spaces of Utopia: Call for Papers
Special Issue on “Women Scientists in Utopia”

Science has always played a fundamental role in utopian/dystopian texts. The majority of
scientists, however, even in those texts, were men. The questions this special issue of Spaces of
Utopia wishes to raise are the following:
- Why are there so few women scientists in the utopian genre?
- Is that still the case?
- When did that situation change and why?

As the editor of this issue, I am interested in papers that examine how these vexed issues have
been treated, both in fiction and in film, taking into account the substantial amount of
theoretical work that has been produced on this subject from multiple and interdisciplinary
perspectives.
Although texts from all periods will be considered, the preferred focus for this issue is a
contemporary one.

Please send a 250 word abstract as well as brief biographical information to Maria Aline Seabra
Ferreira (aline_at_ua.pt).

Deadline for submission of an Abstract will be the 30th of April 2008.
Deadline for submission of the completed article will be the 23rd of July 2008
