Keynote Speakers: Ernesto Laclau and Lauren Berlant

The World Picture conference is an annual meeting devoted to theory that
takes place in the intimate setting of Stillwater, Oklahoma. This year’s
meeting will gather theorists from around the world, and from across
disciplines, to address questions of the popular. We are accepting
proposals for papers that address this issue in any number of ways. Some
possible topics might include, but are not limited to:

Joseph Conrad expressed apprehension about the political and moral

utility of literature, W.H. Auden claimed that poetry makes nothing

happen, and Theodor Adorno asserted that there could be no poetry after

Auschwitz. Yet, in the postmodern era there is no shortage of art or of

theories that speak to political realities, conflict and calamity. In the

21stcentury and in the 7th year of the official “War on Terror” we ask: is

the pen mightier than the sword? Is art acting as a social corrective? Is

This session welcomes proposals that address issues of borders (either
physical or conceptual), migration, transnationalism, and travel in
20th/21st century Francophone literature. How has the contemporary
experience of mass migration contributed to the erasing of borders? How
have migrant writers re-defined their literary identities and re-shaped
literary canons? What are the limits and possibilities of migrant writing
to intervene in society on socio-economic and political levels? What is the
role of ethics in narratives of border-crossing, cosmopolitanism, and
globalization? What kinds of communities are created across borders? In
what ways do fictional works encourage readers to cross over borders,
