Century Transatlanticism

Binghamton University
Binghamton, New York November 7-8, 2008
Keynote Speaker: Leonard Tennenhouse, Brown University

Panel Topic:
Mythological Transformations

This panel will invite papers discussing myth in its various forms in the
nineteenth century. It will encompass the use of ancient myth by authors,
the re-writing of myths in popular culture, and the creation of new
mythologies. Discussions of folklore/fairytales are acceptable. Papers
discussing the nineteenth century advancements in thought and technology
and the affect these have on the Moderns’ and Victorians’ conceptualization
and/or definition of mythology are also welcome. The broad nature of this
panel is meant to encourage a diversity of topics. This panel will promote
a Transatlantic viewpoint through juxtaposing American mythology with
European mythology in the forms stated above. Papers discussing
Transatlantic viewpoints of mythologies, in other words, the differences,
similarities, and reconciliations of American and European myth are
encouraged.
