The University of South Carolina’s Spring Literature Conference:
Literature Since 1800â€"Transitions, Translations, and Transmission
April 10-12, 2009

Recent academic studies of literature often emphasize the transition
between 19th century and 20th century texts, cultural events, and audiences
and between the Continent, Great Britain, and the Americas. The 2009 Spring
Literary Conference at the University of South Carolina seeks to
interrogate and explore the borders between 19th and 20th centuries and the
geographic borders of the western world over the past two centuries.

As such, we invite submissions for the Spring 2009 Literary Conference that
take up issues of transitions, translation, transmission from the 19th and
20th centuries and from American, British, and European perspectives. Ideas
we wish to explore include the following: how does an idea translate from
an author to a text across cultures and times? In what ways does the method
of communication affect a work? What changes occur between the centuries
and across the ocean that effect literature and its readers? What happens
when we re-read a text in a new format or genre? How do texts translate
among genders?

Possible topics include:
â€"Travel narratives
â€"Dramatic texts and performances
â€"Technologies of communication
â€"Texts that change genre
â€"Changing perspectives on colonization
â€"Transitions between rural and urban spaces
â€"Transitions from city to metropolis
â€"The world changed by the Great War
â€"Evolving cultures of publication
â€"Shifting concepts of subjectivity
â€"Changing narrative methods
â€"Changes brought about by global capitalism

Proposals of no more than 500 words should be submitted no later than 1
December 2008. We also welcome panel submissions and encourage graduate
students to submit their work.
