Seminar Organizers:

Stephenie Young, Salem State College (syoung2_at_salemstate.edu)

We welcome papers that address the following:

Writing and art produced in response to war has grown at a rapid pace as
cultures attempt to translate events taking place in other local
cultures. Attempts to understand the human condition of war in the second
half of the twentieth century have been bolstered by, and influential on,
trauma studies, human rights activism, and new forms of expression that
seek to present the unspeakable. Among those trying to come to terms with
the global politics of modern warfare have been writers such as Susan
Sontag, Slavoj Zizek, Jean Baudrillard, Cathy Caruth, Philip Gourevitch,
and Slavenka Drakulic, and artists such as James Nachtwey, Timothy
Greenfield-Sanders, Zoriah, Ehren Tool, Silvia Kolbowski, Paul Chan, et
al. These and others like them have worked at the psychological and
physical boundaries of war, and continue to reconfigure ways that war
might be translated into an understandable language.

This panel addresses recent fiction and creative non-fiction writing
(including testimony, memoir), visual art, photography, film and video,
and performance art about war to open up discussion about the future of
war representation as a global phenomenon that must address local needs.
We seek papers that are critically engaged with the recent discourse of
war in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and which address any
contemporary war zone and its literary or artistic production. Questions
that might be considered: How is war defined or mediated by
literature/art in the postmodern era? How do we find a global language
for war?

If you wish to submit a paper, you must do it through the ACLA website.
