Panel: “Familial Borderlands? Writing the Second Generation in America”

“Migration, Border, and the Nation-State”
Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, USA
April 9-11, 2009

Seeking papers that explore the complex identity of the second generation
in contemporary America (i.e. persons born or raised from a young age in
the US). While Susan Stanford Friedman’s concept of “roots and routes”
and Stuart Hall’s “cultural borderlands” offer insights into the personal
and cultural negotiations of second-generation Americans, the concepts of
diaspora, transnationalism, and cosmopolitanism may complicate and
facilitate our understanding of this unique space. While papers about
authors’ personal circumstances will be considered, priority will be
given to papers that explore the literary construction of the second
generation. Authors of interest include Jhumpa Lahiri, Diana Abu-Jaber,
Junot Diaz, Edwidge Danticat, Sandra Cisneros, and Chang-rae Lee; papers
on other writers are also welcome.
