The Department of History and Philosophy at the University of the West
Indies (UWI), Cave Hill, and The Barbados Museum and Historical Society
(BMHS) have launched their 10-part lecture series “Slavery in Barbados”.

The second lecture will be delivered by UWI doctoral candidate and acting
director of the Commission for Pan-African Affairs Deryck Murray, on the
“Origins of the Enslaved” on February 17, 2009 at 8 p.m. at ‘Solidarity
House’, the Barbados Workers Union headquarters in Harmony Hall, St Michael.

MLA Proposed Special Session: Eric Rohmer: The Moral Tales.

I am seeking 20-minute papers that address any aspect of the films that
make up Rohmer’s Six Moral Tales for an MLA special session proposal.
(Philadelphia, December 2009). Send 250-word abstracts and a brief vitae
by 1 March to Leah Anderst (leah.anderst_at_gmail.com). Notification of
acceptance will be made by 20 March. Accepted panelists must be MLA

Chelsea House, a New York publisher of reference works for schools and
libraries, is seeking an author to write a critical guide to literature
produced by and relating to Arab Americans and Muslim Americans, with a
particular focus on both the classic and contemporary, mainstream titles
currently read by high school (and university) English students. The title
will profile, in approximately 40,000 to 50,000 words, eight to ten
prominent contemporary figures (subject to approval) two of their major
works each, in addition to providing a general overview of the history and
development of Muslim- and Arab-American literature in the United States.

CFP: D. H. Lawrence's Circle and Short Stories

The D. H. Lawrence Society of North American (DHLSNA) invites individuals to submit abstracts
for consideration for the 2009 MLA meeting in Philadelphia (which will be held from December
27th through 30th).

The DHLSNA is organizing two panels: "D. H. Lawrence's Circle" and "D. H.
Lawrence's Short Stories." For the "D. H. Lawrence's Short Stories" panel, we are interested in
projects of theoretical, biographical, literary, or cultural interest involving one or more of the
short stories.

Abstracts are invited for a proposed special session at the 2009 MLA
Convention (to be held 27-30 December in Philadelphia). This session
seeks papers which explore aesthetics and cultural politics in Victorian
poetry. Because of its dense and complex linguistic experimentation and
structural ambiguity, Victorian poetry foregrounds the inseparability of
the epistemological and the discursive to the degree that it is
distinctive among cultural forms of the period and not merely one among
many. Varying theoretical accounts of both Romantic and Victorian poetic
form have been offered (for instance: Wolfson, Esterhammer, Armstrong,
Slinn). Still, despite this important earlier work, few Victorian
