Home/sickness: Desire, Decay, and the Seduction of Nostalgia

The University of Florida's 9th annual English Graduate Organization conference will explore nostalgia, focusing on the contradictory relations among desires for recovered pasts as well as deliberate attempts to manipulate the present through representations of the past. Of particular interest will be the extent to which both nostalgia and the desire for utopia are linked to historical trauma, as textual manifestations of an extratextual cause.

[DEADLINE] Redefining Masculinity in 20th-Century British Popular Fiction and Culture: Sep. 30, 2009.

This panel will examine redefinitions of masculinity that challenge and intersect with global and national relations. Since conceptions of British masculinity had been shaped by a longstanding culture of empire and its agenda, the shift from an imperial to a decolonized Britain and the impact of the World Wars make the 20th-century a particularly ripe period for inquiries into concomitant reformulations of masculinity in popular culture and literature.Genres may include adventure tales, comics, war/espionage fiction, graphic novels, sci-fi, fantasy, and film. One line from Wilfred Owen's unfinished preface to his posthumous Poems (1920) can be read as a synecdoche for much elegiac writing of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Anticipating the disconsolate tenor later elegies sound and the resistances they levy to socially and politically sustained practices of mourning, Owen warns readers that the elegies in his book "are to this generation in no sense consolatory."

This panel explores the connections between reality and imagined or imaginary worlds by examining the ways in which sight, and in particular the seeing of things that are not present or do not exist, contributes to knowledge and understanding. The faculty of vision is often a metaphor for understanding and learning, and the mystical or otherworldly vision represents not only an explanation for the integration and processing of new information into an older worldview, but a metaphorical space in which personal growth can be demonstrated through "seeing" new connections and truths.

This roundtable aims to create a discussion about the role and methods of the study of medieval literature in the contemporary world. In the modern context, seemingly so far removed from the medieval context, scholars and students of medieval literature are presented with numerous problems as we try to read, interpret, and understand across the chronological divide. How do we approach medieval literature and culture from an analytical perspective? How can we (or can we at all) appropriately use modern interpretative tools with medieval texts? As teachers, how do we help students approach the radically different worldview of the Middle Ages and appreciate medieval literature for what it is rather than what it is not?
