PUPIL Journal Seeks Submissions for Spring 2010 Issue

PUPIL, CSUF's Teaching Writing Club's annual pedagogy journal, seeks
submissions for its 2010 issue. We are of the mind that the best
teachers define themselves not as teachers, but learners. We seek to
publish works for teachers who want to teach and who want to be
taught. We believe that to stop learning is reason to stop teaching.
Teach. Learn. Submit.

Submissions must pertain to teaching composition or creative writing
in higher education.

Submissions may address topics such as, but not limited to: pedagogy
theory, teaching experience, tutoring experience, conducting
workshops, syllabus and course planning, creating assignments, and
student voice.

The Kansas Association of Teachers of English invites proposals for practical and experiential 45-minute sessions that explore students' development as readers and writers both inside and outside our classrooms. The 2010 conference theme--"Going Public:
Sustaining School and Community Literacies"--may address questions such as the following: How can we best support our students' literacy development? How do our school-based reading and writing activities relate to our students' extracurricular reading and writing? What should the public roles of teachers be? How can we best inform the public about our educational concerns? How can we encourage our students—and ourselves—to become more critical and active participants in our communities?

CFP: Small Group Collaborative Learning & Writing: A Practical Sourcebook

Small Group Collaborative Learning & Writing: A Practical Sourcebook will be an edited collection of essays demonstrating the "how tos" of small group collaborative work in writing classes published by McFarland Press in 2012. Although essays must be based on scholarly theories and research, the primary focus of the essays should be on the pragmatic and pedagogical applications of the theories to the writing class, including some discussion of the results of your work.

The proposed organization for the collection focuses on some of the key questions about integrating small group collaborative activities into the classroom:

• Why are collaborative learning and writing important?

• How do I best assign groups in my classes?

The "Authorship and Auteurism" area of the Midwest Popular Culture Association/Midwest American Culture Association is now accepting proposals for its upcoming conference. The MPCA/MACA conference will be held Friday October 1 – Sunday October 3, 2010, at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This panel seeks papers that analyze any aspect of auteur theory or authorship studies. Topics may explore any popular medium or cultural production from any time period or country. Of particular interest are papers that focus on authorship and auteurism within the contexts of corporate conglomeration, "globalization" and transnationalism, and technological convergence.

What can the philosophy of language contribute to narrative theory?

When we ask how a sentence in use expresses the thought that attaches to it, or how descriptions of relations conjure the fictional world that in turn depends upon them, what we are really revealing is the conditions that must obtain if the sentence or relations are to count as meaningful. Each referring term in a narrative carries its truth conditions with it—-a speaker's propositional attitudes or background, her intention, the conventions within which she and the narrative operates, the criteria under which readers can verify, use, translate, or name the object of her sentence—-and as these conditions shift, characters and plots emerge and develop.

Reimagining Shakespeare: Essay Collection

The editors of Reimagining Shakespeare invite contributions for an interdisciplinary collection of essays on film adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. We are particularly interested in exploring film adaptations that reimagine, revise, or remodel the worlds of Shakespeare's works. Contributors may choose to address films that radically alter the plays in terms of tone, ideology, or even genre by transforming them into other stand-alone works of art, such as Akira Kurosawa's recasting of King Lear as samurai epic in his 1985 Ran. We also invite considerations of popular updatings of the plays such as Baz Luhrman's 1997 Romeo + Juliet. Further, we welcome essays that focus on the pedagogical opportunities (or challenges) such film adaptations offer.

MLA special session

An MLA/LA special session invites proposals exploring the originality and modernity of sonnetry, including experiment, tradition, iconography, typography, forms, occasions, locations, and questions of genre for a roundtable discussion, January 6-9, 2011, in Los Angeles. This session considers the following questions: Is sonnetry congruent with modernity or does the choice of sonnetry inevitably signal joining a long tradition? What forms and reforms do late sonneteers project in order to seem "modern" to their own generation? And in the always-felt command of "modernity," what new or fresh attention do sonneteers need from us? How do sonneteers answer the "formal charges" often raised by critics against the genre?
