Writers assemble!

Principle photography has commenced on the new Marvel Studios superhero epic, "The Avengers", directed by one of pop culture's greatest creative talents, Joss Whedon.

To commemorate this event, Popmatters.com will place a Spotlight on Joss Whedon's rich and varied career.

This is a call for proposals. We are seeking essays that will cover every aspect of Whedon's unique and varied body of work. The Spotlight will have two major components: feature articles that zero in on an important aspect of Whedon's work and a series of "Joss Whedon 101" articles that will introduce newcomers to each of his individual projects.

From the iconic television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", through subsequent shows like "Angel", "Firefly", and "Dollhouse" and to all the way to Internet triumph "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog", Whedon has redefined the pop culture landscape. He has brought an extraordinary level of intelligence and creativity to every medium that he has touched, whether television, film, Internet, or comics.

If you have something interesting or original to say about Joss Whedon, we want to know about it. The essays should be literate and directed at a highly intelligent, though not necessarily academic, audience. They should help illuminate the ways that Joss Whedon's work matters for those interested in pop culture.
For the feature articles, we welcome essays from a variety of perspectives, including, but not limited to, the following:

• Textual analyses of individual shows or episodes;
• Character studies;
• Interdisciplinary comparative studies;
• Thematic studies of ideas that run throughout Whedon's work;
• Other innovative analyses.

Proposals for feature essays should provide both the topic to be covered and something about the approach to be undertaken. They needn't be all that long – 250 words should be adequate – but please give us a feel for what your completed essay will be like.

For "Joss Whedon 101," we are seeking 1,000 to 2,500 word introductory essays on each of the following:

• Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Motion Picture
• Buffy the Vampire Slayer
• Angel
• Fray and Tales of the Slayers
• Firefly
• Serenity
• The Astonishing X-Men
• Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8
• The Runaways
• Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
• Dollhouse
• Cabin in the Woods (focusing on its current status)
• The Avengers (as a work in progress)

We also hope to have interviews with several people who are associated with the Whedonverse in one way or another.

We look forward to reading your proposals! Please submit them by 01/15/2011 to moore@popmatters.com.

Thanks for your interest! We feel that this could be a truly exciting and thought provoking event and we look forward to you participating in it.
