I am interested in putting together a panel dedicated solely to the topic of Fantasy Sports at the 2012 national PCA/ACA conference in Boston, Massachusetts. Papers addressing the theoretical, cultural, and/or historical implications of fantasy sports in general or of specific fantasy sports are highly encouraged, but all papers on this topic will be considered. The Humanities Research Institute at the University of Newcastle invites academics from a wide a variety of disciplines — including anthropology, art, criminology, history, international relations, law, literature, psychology, philosophy, political science and sociology — to submit proposals for panels and individual papers at its conference, Histories of Violence, to be held in the city of Newcastle from 21-23 August 2012.

This special issue seeks theoretically informed essays that explore how dedicated fans as well as the broader public have appropriated, interpreted, and transformed comic books and comic book characters to define themselves and their societies.

The word "network" is more likely to call to mind computer connection than the "glittering net-work" of a spider-web (E. Darwin, The Botanic Garden, 1781) or a "Mantle of blacke silke" (Book of Robes, 1600). What is the link between such "curious Piece[s] of network" (Addison, Spectator 275, 1712) and contemporary social networking? These older uses of network illuminate the development of early modern techniques of loose connection. By contrast with a chain-of-being model, networks are versatile, allowing for manifold modes of association.
