ninepatch: Call for Submissions
Like the quilt pattern it's named for, ninepatch: A Journal for Women & Gender Studies gathers the work of emerging and experienced artists who have chosen different patterns and forms, all expressive in individual ways, yet similar in their main purpose. ninepatch strives to express gender in all of its forms, through words, images, sounds, movement, mixed media, or other types of human experience that can be reproduced in an online format.
Because ninepatch is not ultra-sleek in its web presence, the journal may be described as more organic in its perspective; since our definition of art is similarly flexible, the journal will accept traditional literary forms and artwork as well as representations of domestic arts—culinary to fabric—to illustrate gender in distinctly different ways, all potentially viable. The editors and artists will respect and hold onto tradition as they shape and stitch the present and envision a collective future.
The inaugural issue of ninepatch will appear in June 2012 for the spring/summer season. The theme for this issue is "Awakenings." We are accepting submissions from February 1 through April 30, 2012.
Types of Submissions Considered
We will accept any of the following artwork that explores the concept of "Awakenings" through the lens of gender.
*spoken word/slam poetry
*interviews of artists, activists, community leaders
*culinary arts (e.g., a short story with a recipe)
