[UPDATE] Celebrity Couples Conference, Sat 24th November 2012

Saturday, March 31, 2012 - 1:56pm
University of Southampton, Southampton, UK.

This conference seeks to explore the phenomenon of the celebrity power couple: those relationships where two stars come together and where their individual identities as celebrities become inseparable from their status as a famous couple. With the prominence of one-name couples (Brangelina, TomKat) and famous families (Will Smith / Jada Pinkett Smith and kids), it is becoming increasingly clear that celebrity is no longer an individual pursuit (if it ever was). When combining forces through agents and managers, these couples can straddle different celebrity spheres (David and Victoria Beckham).

Double-Consciousness and Modernist Personae

Saturday, March 31, 2012 - 1:21pm
MSA 14 (Modernist Studies Association Conference; October 18-21; Las Vegas)

This panel revisits W.E.B. Du Bois's famous articulation of the problem of racial double-consciousness in relation to modernist literary practice. It considers ways in which modernist writers recast what Du Bois saw as a debilitating split between "two unreconciled strivings" into a powerful model for literary production that could be both autobiographical and experimental. How do we understand authors who seem to have intentionally resisted "merg[ing]" contradictory versions of themselves into a coherent authorial identity? And in a modernist moment that lauded irony, fragmentation, and the use of personae, what is the relationship between these aesthetic techniques and the lived experience they claim to mask (or as Du Bois might have it, to veil)?

Saturday, March 31, 2012 - 1:14pm

Paper proposals are invited for a panel, 'The 'post-millennial context' and African writing in English', part of the Afican Studies Association UK Biennial Conference 2012 literature stream, 'New Articulations in Africa's Literatures and Cultures', organised by Stephanie Newell and Ranka Primorac.
The conference will be held at the University of Leeds, UK, 6-8 September, 2012.

Christmas in Scandinavian Cinema

Friday, March 30, 2012 - 11:39am
Tarja Laine/University of Amsterdam

CFP: Scandinavian cinema and Christmas

In his introduction to the book Christmas at the Movies (2002), Jeffrey Richards writes:

"During the nineteenth century the family reading of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol was one of the rituals of Christmas. In the latter part of the twentieth century, the ritual showing of Frank Capra's film It's a Wonderful Life took its place. This is symptomatic of the process by which cinema became an integral part of the celebration of Christmas in the twentieth century" (Richards, 'General Editor's Introduction').

Friday, March 30, 2012 - 11:12am

In the early twenty-first century, zombies are everywhere—in film (Land of the Dead, 28 Days Later, Dead Snow, Rammbock, The Horde), fiction (Stephen King's Cell, Colson Whitehead's Zone One, Max Brooks' World War Z, John Ajvide Lindqvist's Handling the Undead), social movements (zombie walks and the Zombie Research Society ), classrooms (Zombie Studies) and even politics (Daniel Drezner's Theories of International Politics and Zombies). Undoubtedly one of the most sustained and complex representations of the modern zombie, though, is AMC's television series, The Walking Dead, based on Robert Kirkman's series of comics.
