Animal in the German Ecocritical Discourse

updated:
Monday, July 2, 2012 - 11:41am
2012 Annual Convention of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association (SAMLA), November 9–11 2012, Durham, NC

The rise of the ecologically-oriented approaches in German-language literatures and scholarship calls for a new look at some traditional literary topics and representations in connection with the relationship of man and his natural environment. This panel seeks to (re) evaluate the literary representation of animals and related images in the light of eco-criticism. We invite abstracts for papers exploring the image of animals in the works of German-language authors of any period. Possible topic areas include, but are not limited to, animal studies, animality studies, cultural studies, ethics and animal rights, and animal-related postcolonial and modernist discourses.

CFP Ol3Media: Sex

Sex has always been one of the crucial elements of all media productions (cinema, theatre, television, videogames, comics, web) and one of the hot topic of debates, and not just within the academic circles, on the ways and extent of its representation, from mainstream to porn.
The next issue of Ol3Media is seeking short papers on the subject, with respect to different productions: both those that focus on sex in a programmatic way and those that have representation of it within products that have a wider focus.

Possible suggestions (but proposals on different topics are welcome):

Leiden University Graduate Conference "Death: the Cultural Meaning of the End of Life", 24-25 January, 2013

updated:
Monday, July 2, 2012 - 5:12am
Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS)

Death is a defining factor in the explorations of our subjectivity, art, history,
politics, and many other aspects of our social interactions and perceptions of the
world. In the modern age, conceptions of death have continued to shift and
evolve, yet our perceptions are still fueled by an instinctive fear of the end of life.

In recent decades, we have rebelled against the threat of death by inventing new technologies and medicines that have drastically increased our life expectancy—diseases and disabilities are gradually disappearing. Some believe that one day we will completely conquer the aging process, and ultimately death. Life can now be seen as a new form of commodity, a material object that we can trade, sell, or buy.

Digital Humanities Back When Pluto Was a Planet (Berlin transmediale, 29 Jan - 3 Feb 2013)

Chris Leslie

I am seeking theoretical, scholarly, contemplative papers as well as purposeful moments of silence on the theme of Digital Humanities Back When Pluto Was a Planet for a proposed panel discussion at the 2013 transmediale festival in Berlin.

The theme of this year's transmediale is "Back When Pluto Was a Planet," calling to mind how definitions represent larger frameworks of understanding. The downgrading of Pluto's position in the solar system reflects how what seems to be a stable network can be quickly recontextualized.

We wish to cultivate a more comprehensive understanding of the Southwest's and Mexico's cinematic past by showcasing and analyzing the ways the region has been imagined in "hidden" and lesser-known films produced by non-Hollywood and amateur filmmakers during the last century.
