Women and Work: panel proposed for ASA conference, November 21-24, 2013, Washington, D.C.

Friday, December 28, 2012 - 2:55pm
American Studies Association

The meaning of "women's work" has never been stable. While women have consistently engaged with the production of home as well as labor outside the home, their involvement in what Marx conceptualized as wage-for-labor power exchange did not achieve heightened visibility in U.S. cultures until the nineteenth century. "Women and Work" seeks to explore the many ways that women have offered their labor in service of their families, their communities, and their nation and how labor has contributed to women's sense of belonging to (or exclusion from) these same communities. How do U.S. women represent the work of being women -- where "work" encompasses not only paid labor inside and outside the home, but also the work of performing femininity and domesticity?

Friday, December 28, 2012 - 10:09am
Lyrica Society for Word/Music Relations

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of the publication of _Waverley_, the Lyrica Society is sponsoring a session on the interconnection between the works of Sir Walter Scott and music. And the connection is great. Scott's works were the basis for countless operas and musical theatre pieces, as well as texts for many songs.

We invite 250-350 word proposals by March 1st, 2013 on any aspect of Scott and music. Send them to DrJSDailey@aol.com, and put "Scott MLA 2014" in the subject line.

[MLA Session] Global Art, Western American Context

Friday, December 28, 2012 - 8:31am
Western Literature Association / Max Despain

Chicago, the 2014 MLA conference location, inspires thought about the individual experience of works of art, and, as the Chicago Art Institute describes: "the irreplaceable embodiments of the creative impulse from all times and areas," within the specific context of the American West. From elaborate collections found in museums such as the Chicago Art Institute to the somewhat simple act of reading Shakespeare in a small Western town, how does experiencing art removed from its original context and placed in an utterly different location and time influence original Western American artistic production?
