Special issue of Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight and Society on Intersections, guest edited by Cat Pausé, PhD

This special issue of Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight and Society will engage with the issue of intersectionality. As an interdisciplinary field, Fat Studies represents an intersection for many academics: a blending of the home discipline with the theoretical and methodological frameworks of Fat Studies. This intersection provides richness, but also possible tension.

The Rodopi Press Dialogue Series seeks proposals for new writings to be included in a volume of critical essays devoted to Pulitzer-prize winning author Marilynne Robinson's fiction with specific emphasis on the novels Gilead and Home, as well as her first novel, Housekeeping, and her collected and uncollected essays. The volume seeks submissions in the following areas:
● Robinson's ecological concerns and their relationship to her spirituality and aesthetics.
● Robinson's influence on contemporary writers via her work in the Iowa Writers Workshop.

American literature. What interpretive issues result from his revival as a touchstone of popular literary culture? [UPDATE] Keynote Speaker Confirmed: Dr. James Martel will be delivering the keynote lecture on his recent book "Divine Violence: Walter Benjamin and the Eschatology of Sovereignty"

The San Francisco State University Humanities Department is currently soliciting paper proposals for the 2013 Humanities Symposium to be held on Saturday April 13, 2013. Presentations should be 15-20 minutes long. We are also open to topic-centered panel proposals of 3 presenters per panel. The Humanities Symposium is interdisciplinary in scope and open to all students in all humanities-related fields.

The 10th Annual Summer Shaw Symposium on July 16-28, 2013, co-hosted with the International Shaw Society by the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, invites proposals for papers to be submitted to Professor Brad Kent at Brad.Kent@lit.ulaval.ca for 20 minute presentations. The ISS and the Shaw Festival also offer a combination Travel Grant/Bryden Scholarship for Emerging Scholars that provides free accommodation for the three days of the symposium, free registration, and some help with paying for travel.

This inter- and multi-disciplinary conference seeks to explore if, or to what extent, meaning can be found in suffering. During the course of living our lives, we are invariably forced to stop and question why we suffer – be it through illness, pain, loss, grief or the multitude of distressing circumstances which we encounter. Problems arise in a variety of contexts and due to a bewildering variety of conditions. And because our lives are constant streams of experience, the nature of suffering and consequently the "meaning" of such suffering continually varies and changes.
