The summers of Eugene O'Neill's formative years were spent in the family's vacation home in New London, Connecticut—what is known today as the Monte Cristo Cottage. This conference will explore the significance of this National Historic Landmark and other venues that inspired the plays of O'Neill, America's only Nobel-Prize-winning playwright.

Although the Monte Cristo Cottage was the setting for only two O'Neill plays, Ah, Wilderness! and Long Day's Journey Into Night, the themes of home, domesticity, and family resonate loudly throughout his plays in many different iterations: from nostalgically celebrated to desperately sought-after to cynically criticized. We invite proposals on all aspects of O'Neill's plays as they relate to these themes, including those that make connections to broader historical, political, or theatrical concerns and those that consider the influence of his plays on future generations.

Proposals are invited in these formats:
1. Individual papers of 15-20 minutes
2. Panel presentation on a particular theme with a minimum of three speakers, none to exceed 20 minutes
3. Roundtable discussion of 75 minutes on a particular topic, with 3-6 participants

One-page proposals should include name, academic affiliation, mail and email addresses, paper title, and detailed abstract. Panel or roundtable proposals should include this information for all participants, with brief paper abstracts for panels or participant bios for roundtables.
