13th Global Conference: Environmental Justice and Citizenship

Call for Presentations:
The Environmental Justice and Citizenship conference provides a forum for inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary study of the role of environmental thinking in the context of communities, justice, rights and citizenship. 'Environmental justice' is conceived broadly to consider not only human communities but also other species, ecosystems, habitats, landscapes, succeeding generations and the environment as a whole. 'Citizenship' is understood as an awareness of an individual's responsibilities in the global context.

The 13th Conference of Environmental Justice and Citizenship will explore models, approaches and context necessary to solve the problems impeding environmental justice and living justly in a warming world. We request contributions which propose technological, political or economic solutions to these problems, or discuss conditions and factors necessary to developing, evaluating, implementing or supporting solutions. The conference welcomes scholars and practitioners in different disciplines to join our ongoing conversation, begun 12 years ago, about achieving environmental justice and citizenship.

*Presentations, papers, performances, reports and workshops are invited on any of the following indicative themes:

*Citizenship and empowerment: institutions and practices that contribute to increased participation and efficacy in bringing about social and political change

*Compassion in environmental justice and citizenship: ways in which the private and individual are translated to the public and communal; finding alternatives to corporate capitalism to address social vulnerability and public health

*Environment, identity and peace: examining culture as a vital pillar of sustainability

*Environment, security and violence: the relationships between violence to the environment and human violence

*Environmental sustainability and economic growth: interdependencies or conflicts between environmental responsibility and affluence

*Social role of science: creating new communities and redefining roles of existing communities to support environmental justice

*Digital citizens/global citizens: the role of technology in creating new dependencies and opportunities

*Triggers and effects: human and non-human, visible and invisible: potential frameworks for understanding goals and process of environmental justice

*The Warming World: communicating the immediacy and reach of environmental damage

Perspectives are sought from all disciplines and we encourage submissions from people working in:

-The natural and social sciences, and people engaged in actor network theory, agriculture and agricultural economics, the built environment and urban studies, conflict and dispute resolution, critical geography, environmental studies, human and sustainable development, industrial relations, law, philosophy and ethics, political science and international affairs, public policy and politics, sociology and communication of science, theology, cultural studies and anthropology.
-The public and private sectors; people involved in planning and project development, policy-making and implementation, and negotiation and mediation at national and international levels.
-Governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations, voluntary sector bodies, environmental charities and groups, business and professional associations.

The Steering Group welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals.

In order to support and encourage interdisciplinarity engagement, it is our intention to create the possibility of starting dialogues between the parallel events running during this conference. Delegates are welcome to attend up to two sessions in each of the concurrent conferences. We also propose to produce cross-over sessions between these groups – and we welcome proposals which deal with the relationship between Environmental Justice and Visions of Humanity and the Animal and Human Bond.

What to Send
Proposal will also be considered on any related theme. 300 word proposals should be submitted by Friday 14th February 2014. If a proposal is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper of no more than 3000 words should be submitted by Friday 16th May 2014. Proposals should be submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.
E-mails should be entitled: EJGC13 Proposal Submission.

Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using footnotes and any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). We acknowledge receipt and answer to all proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.

The conference is part of the Critical Issues series of research projects run by Inter-Disciplinary.Net. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions which are innovative and challenging. All proposals accepted for and presented at the conference must be in English and will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected proposals may be developed for publication in a themed hard copy volume(s). All publications from the conference will require editors, to be chosen from interested delegates from the conference.
