Environmental Influences in Faulkner and Erdrich
(SCMLA Austin, TX; October 18-22, 2014)

While much has been written about the connections between the work of William Faulkner and Toni Morrison, there has not been much exploration of the relationship between Faulkner's work and that of one of Morrison's contemporaries, Louise Erdrich, even though Erdrich has mentioned during interviews Faulkner's influence on her reading and creative work. Keeping with the conference theme of "Forces of Nature," this panel will explore shared reactions to the environment (in all of its forms) in works by Faulkner and Erdrich. Additional possibilities include, but are not limited to, questions of influence and revision, regionalism, identity, and cultural differentiation in their fiction.
