Sex and Reproduction in Irish Modernism--MSA 16 (Pittsburgh, November 6-9, 2014)

full name / name of organization:
Daniel Aureliano Newman / University of Toronto

James Joyce once described the Irish artist as a "man without a sexual education." This proposed panel explores how a culture of silence and repression of sexuality, especially as it relates to reproduction, inflects and motivates Irish modernist literature. Of particular interest are papers on Elizabeth Bowen or the early work of Edna O'Brien, but all proposals on reproduction/sex in Irish modernism will be considered. Please send an abstract (max. 250 words) and a brief professional bio to Dan Newman (daniel.newman[at]mail.utoronto.ca) by May 2, 2014.

*This CFP is for a proposed panel for the Modernist Studies Association Conference to be held in Pittsburgh on November 6-9.
